CHSAA Bylaw 1780.2
Removal for Illness or Injury

If at any time during participation, a licensed health care provider removes an athlete from participation because of an illness and/or injury, other than a head injury (please see Bylaw 1780.21), the athlete must have a written release from an approved licensed health care provider before participating again.

  • Medical clearance is required if an athlete sees a physician per CHSAA Bylaws and Jefferson County protocols. This is to verify the physician orders to ensure the athlete is participating within the orders given. If an injury or illness occurs before the season persists into the season, or occurs during a season, documentation should be provided to the athlete's athletic trainer. If in doubt, the athletic trainer will be able to provide guidance on when clearance is required.

  • Licensed clinicians who are allowed to release athletes that have been removed from participation:

    • MD, DO, Nurse Practitioners, Physicians Assistants and Doctors of Chiropractic who are School Physical Certified (DC, Spc)

    • The athletic trainer is permitted to hold the athlete out for a time if it is deemed necessary, even if the athlete  has been cleared to return to participation by an approved licensed health care provider.

This handbook is intended to be a resource and is not an all-inclusive list of policies and procedures in Jefferson County. For additional information on policies and procedures specific to Jefferson County, please consult your high school athletic trainer.
